With the fall semester in full swing, we had our first external service event with Mobile Loaves and Fishes this past weekend.
The sisters of Tau Beta Sigma, along with some prospective members, met at the downtown United Methodist Church where they helped prepare sandwiches, fruit, cookies and drinks for the homeless community. The group then loaded the Mobile Loaves and Fishes food truck and went downtown near the Salvation Army to hand out the prepared food.
While people flocked to the food truck to grab a meal, the TBS ladies performed traditional Longhorn Band tunes such as Deep in the Heart of Texas and March Grandioso.
Mobile Loaves and Fishes is the largest program in Austin that provides prepared food to the homeless. Thousands of volunteers are needed to keep the program running every day, all year. We are very happy to be a part of this volunteer program and to serve the Austin community!

On September 15th, a portion of our Longhorn Band traveled to Los Angeles to perform at the USC v. UT game the following day.
We arrived at LAX at 9am with the entire day ahead of us! We sprang onto a bus that was headed for the beautiful Santa Monica pier where we would spend our afternoon. We got to hang out at the beach, ride the rollercoaster and Ferris wheel, cool down with some ice cream and get our fortune from Zoltar. That evening, we performed a few of our traditional tunes at the Montage Hotel in Beverly Hills for fellow Longhorns.
The next morning began by exploring some of LA’s finest brunch restaurants and loading up for game day! We arrived at the USC campus with enough time to explore its beauty, and soon after we suited up and performed at some of the Longhorn tailgates to hype up UT fans.
The game took place in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which is where the 1984 Olympics were held. The coliseum was sold out and the energy at the game was almost tangible! After double overtime, we were defeated but not without the USC fans giving us a standing ovation for a great game. We headed back to Austin, and after what felt like a week, we arrived back in Austin only 48 hours after we had left.

On September 2nd, 2017, the sisters of Tau Beta Sigma had the opportunity to have our first Game Day Service! Only a few days after classes began, those of us in the Beta Gamma chapter were excited to finally give back to the organization we adore so much. Upon the release of the sign up sheets, all spots were filled up within a matter of a few minutes. Many of us were thrilled to work Hall Sales, carry med kits, or give water at the first game.
The UT vs Maryland game was definitely a game to remember. The signature Texas heat was impacting a good amount of the band, but many of the sisters were able to provide plentiful amounts of water throughout the game. As the game progressed, we were also able to distribute sunscreen to those who needed help to combat the fierce sun.
Our next game on September 9th, was much more forgiving. This time, we had more water jugs to distribute water from and the weather was significantly cooler. Similar to the first game, we were able to give water and provide lots of sunscreen to all of the band members. Overall, it was great to be back in school and doing service with all of the sisters of the Beta Gamma chapter!
